PHOTOS OF THE PRIZED 1922 STUTZ

The pride of Chapter #62 is its beloved fire truck, painted purple and garishly chromed. The truck was originally purchased by the Redding Fire Department on July 3, 1922, from the Stutz Fire Engine Company for the sum of $12,000.00. It is a triple combination 1000 gallon capacity pumper engine. The Stutz arrived in San Francisco in September of 1922 and was driven to Redding, but along the way, a column of smoke was seen rising as they passed through Orland, CA. They pulled off and assisted in fighting the fire. The Stutz responded to 1000's of fires over the course of 23 years. On May 17, 1945, it was involved in an accident while responding to a house fire, landing on its side in Callaboos Creek. By 1945, the Stutz Fire Engine Company was no longer in business, and it was determined to sell the Stutz rather than repair it. Somehow it made it to Weaverville where it sat in the Weaverville Lumber Mill yard for sometime. Several mill workers who were also Clampers came to its rescue and started the long process of repairing and grooming it for a life of ease. The Stutz comes out of its garage (the old Weaverville Fire Station) several times a year for parades, initiations and, of course, to carry Santa Claus to the Bandstand at Christmas.
